Piegaro is located on the eastern side of the river Nestore, along the Pievaiola, which joins Perugia with Citta' della Pieve. Now reduced to a small village, in the past it had a flourishing business, especially in the manufacturing of glass.
The village origins are uncertain: according to some, however, the name derives from Latin, Plagarium, which later became the actual name. During his life the village suffered various events, such as the domination of the lords of Montegabbione or Filippeschi from Orvieto. Important for its next development was the thirteenth century, durign which glass-makers from Venice stopped in Piegaro and started a thriving production and processing of glass.
The Castle Cibottola, a medieval village that lies close to Piegaro, retains much of the walls feature for the heptagonal plant (7 ends). The small castle was the first of a Franciscan convent, which apparently lived in the same Francis of Assisi. It presents a high octagonal tower (about 20 meters), recently restored. At the top of the tower, a bell donated in 1850 by the Rector of the University of Perugia Peter Tocchi. Castiglion Fosco is another little medieval jewel characteristic for the particular cylindrical tower, which began in 1462 and ended in 1500, as we read in an over to a brick on the second floor.
