History of Cannara

Cannara is identified with the camp that the Romany called Castrum Canarii, which became a real village inhabited only early in the Middle Ages. In the vicinity of the city, close to Collemancio, there are Roman remains, identified with the old Urvinum Hortense, which most likely was destroyed by the Goths at the beginning of the Middle Ages or was abandoned after an earthquake; you can admire some furnishings in the Antiquarium close to the excavations. The village of Cannara already in the twelfth century had a ring of walls and numerous churches. This is demonstrated by staying in the city of St. Francis of Assisi; near here, in Piandarca, where he made the famous Sermon to the birds. The name probably derives from Valerio Ranieri, noble from Perugia, that took refuge here and, finding the place plenty of reeds, named it Cannaia. In 1291 the city is allied with Perugia, not to be subjugated by Assisi. In the years that followed came under the domination of Baglioni, but once conquered by the State of the Church, joined the Duchy of Spoleto. In 1387 he was captured by a group of Breton soldiers, but was later released and made independent thanks to the intervention of Pope Urban VI. But a century later came under the control of the family Baglioni, who held it until 1648, when it passed under the Papal States.
